There’s no denying it – the quality of the photo is perhaps the biggest single factor in looking for e-commerce sales conversions. Humans are visual creatures and a good photo can communicate so much more than the written word. Hence if you are serious about achieving good sales results from your website, then quality photos are paramount. Whatever you are selling – from t shirts to dining tables – potential customers will be pulled in and make that decision to purchase by the photo.
Here at Martin Worster photography – working out of Orange County, Southern California – we recognize the importance of the image in the psychology of the sales process in e commerce. Having a photo that is sharp, bright and perfectly exposed will really help make sure your products are pushed in front of the right eye balls. As long term sellers ourselves of high end antiques and interiors products we come with the added bonus of knowing both sides of the process. Perhaps the biggest insight it has given us is the importance of achieving a good rate of photos in one day – quite simply the more products you have photographed the more likely you are to sell the items and hence get a better return on your investment.
Good quality e commerce photography also requires that the pieces are photographed from all angles so the remote customer can see all facets and angles of what they are buying without touching it. Close ups of distinctive features such as signatures, joints, texture and other details are very important when you cannot see the item in person. Particularly for our area of speciality – antiques and art – it’s very important to exhaustively document every detail. It can be very time consuming but the investment will pay off in the end. Every product sector is different – in antiques, art and interiors the items are often very high value so it’s important the photos pop as much as possible.
Of course the main trend in e commerce product photography is having a white background to really make your pieces stand out. This can be achieved by shooting the products on a light background and then a bit of post-processing in Photoshop. I work using a Nikon Z7 which has 47 million mega pixels and a 4K video camera. The results are outstanding with amazing clarity and resolution. The technology is mind bending and this really replicates well in the products if customers want to zoom in to see details. I shoot with two remote flashes on tripods mounted with umbrella’s to diffuse the harsh flash light. It really allows for fantastic results.
